San Antonio Driving Tour and Visit to Mission San Jose
3:00-6:30 p.m. August 19, 2014
Mission San José, established 1720, is often called the Queen of the Missions. It once held a thriving community within its walls. Visitors to this national park can see the restored mission and visualize what life was like here during the colonial period. A tour of San José, one of five of the San Antonio missions, helps a modern day visitor make comparisons and visualize the layout of the first and most famous mission, San Antonio de Valero, known to the world as the Alamo. Best known for the 1836 battle on its grounds, Mission San Antonio de Valero had been established two years before San Jose, in 1718. The surviving Alamo church, iconic symbol of the battle, has served many functions in its long life. Learn how changing uses altered the face of the old mission. To this day, the city of San Antonio wrestles with ideas about how to best present Alamo history to the public, as well as showcase the history of the other four missions.
